Lenore
H. Alden,
age 91, of Portland, passed away Tuesday, December 1, 2009, at her home.
Mrs. Alden graduated from Sumner County High School in 1935. She graduated
from Western Kentucky University where she was a reference librarian at
the Helms-Cravens Library for 17 years. She was also an advisor for Kappa
Delta Sorority for many years. She is preceded in death by her parents,
Watson Taylor Hardison and Eunice Marie Hill Hardison; grandson, Tommy
Alden; daughter-in-law, Janie Alden; husband of 55 years, John Dale Alden,
a former special agent of the FBI, who died in 1991. She is survived by
her sons, Dr. John D. Alden, Jr., of Columbia, and his wife, Elaine; John
Dale Alden, III, his wife Carrie, and their children, Maddie and Ben; Dr.
Frank Alden of Sevierville, and his children, Frank Alden, Jr., of
Baltimore, Md., wife Christine, and daughter, Ginny Alden of Nashville;
daughter, Betty Alden Crosslin of Portland, her husband, Joe, and her
children, Laura Cary Simmons of Jamestown, R.I., her husband, Lt. Col
Steve Simmons, USMC, and their twin sons, Alden and William, and John Cary
of Bowling Green, Ky., and his wife, Jennifer, and children, Alex, Easton,
and Ashley. She is also survived by her former daughter-in-law, Melinda
Alden of Gallatin. Visitation is 12 noon until 2 p.m., Saturday, December
5, 2009.

1934, to the late Marvin and Naomi Chambliss. She is survived by her

both of Portland; son, Jimmy Ashburn of Ashland City; 10 grandchildren; 14

Jimmy
Loyd Barber, 60, of Panama City, Fla., died on Monday, Oct. 12,
2009. A Portland native, he was born May 4, 1949, to Loyd Barber and the
late Bertha Ray Barber. He was a member of the Portland High School
Panther football team, class of 1967. He traded in his Purple and White
for Western Kentucky Red and White, becoming a star linebacker for the
Hilltoppers, class of 1972. He was inducted into the WKU Athletic Hall of
Fame in 2000. He graduated from Auburn University School of Veterinary
Medicine in 1977. He served as a Public Health Officer in the United
States Air Force, retiring as a Major in 1997 after 20 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mary Linda Barber of Panama City,
Fla.; daughters, Laura Barber of Orlando, Fla., and Sarah Barber and Megan
Barber, both of Panama City, Fla.; son, Kevin Barber of Los Angeles,
Calif.; father, Loyd Barber of Frankin, Ky.; sister, Diane Barber-Miller
of Bethpage; and grandchildren, Andrew Barber, Gabriel Barber and Michael
Barber. Visitation is 1 p.m., until 9 p.m., Friday, October 16, 2009.

Tollie Washington Coakley, age 72, of Gallatin, passed away
March 15, 2009, at Sumner Regional Medical Center. He was born in Sumner
County on July 22, 1936, to the late Gill Moore and Emma Mae Coakley. He
is survived by his sister, Carrie M. Coakley of Portland; brothers,
Clarence W. Coakley of Gallatin, James E. Coakley of Richmond, Ky.; best
friend and caregiver, Ferrell Shaw of Portland; a host of nieces, nephews,
and cousins. Tollie retired from the U.S. Air Force. He was an avid
fisherman, and he enjoyed bowling. While in the military, he was a member
of a worldwide championship bowling team. He was a Deacon of Parkers
Chapel Church, and he served as the Treasurer for the East Fork District
Baptist Association. Visitation is 12 p.m., until service time Thursday,

Elmore Allen Green, age 92 of Portland, Tennessee, departed
this earthly world to be with his Heavenly Father on February 10, 2009, at
N.H.C. of Springfield, Tenn. He was a wonderful husband and a loving
father. He was a gentleman with respect for others. He is survived by his
wife of 68 years, June Pitchford Green; daughter, Donna J. Witham of
Deland, Fla.; sons, David A. (Peggy) Green of Eustis, Florida, Daniel H
(Debbie) Green of Cross Plains, Tennessee; five grandchildren; five great
grandchildren; and an untold number of friends and family throughout the
world. He retired from Bellsouth Telephone Company and was a member of the
Portland First Baptist Church and had over 20 years of service to the Oak
Street Mission. He was a World War II veteran serving in Germany. He was a
local historian and a contributor to Portland’s newspaper. He enjoyed
photography, restoring antique gasoline engines and player pianos.

Wesley P. Lewis, age 87, of Cottontown, passed away November
28, 2009. He was born in Maury County on August 9, 1922, the tenth child
of John J. and Mae Adkison Lewis. He is preceded in death by his parents,
six brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his wife of 68 years,
Earline Lehman Lewis; daughters, Sandra Stinson of Hendersonville, Carol
(John) Burnett of Rockwall, Tex., and Patsy (Larry) Davis of Joelton;
grandchildren, Melissa (Ray) Clounch of Carrollton, Tex., Amy (Mike) Smith
of Rockwall, Tex., Jeff (Mindy) Burnett of Rockwall, Tex., Greg Stinson of
Hendersonville, Mike (Christy) Davis of Joelton, Brandy (Rodney) Cagle of
Joelton; six great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren. As a
teenager, he spent a year in California serving in the Civilian
Conservation Corp and in World War II serving his country in the Navy as a
radio man. He was an expert small engine mechanic, retiring from R.H.
Chilton Co., then operating his own shop until health forced him to close.
He was a Baptist and a 50-year member of Jere Baxter Masonic Lodge.

Wilford C. Short (1928-2009), died peacefully in his sleep on
Monday, December 14, 2009. He is preceded in death by his parents, Cleon
and Buena Link Short. He is survived by his beloved wife for 60 years,
Jean Pond Short; sons, Monty (Cindy) Short and Tony (Sherry) Short;
daughter, Lee Anne Short Crafton; seven grand children and four great
grandchildren. He was a graduate of Sumner County High School where he
excelled in sports and public speaking. He attended Union University on a
football scholarship. He served in the U.S. Marines and the U.S. Air
Force. He retired from Boy Scouts of America after 20+ years as a Scout
Executive. He served as Portland City Judge for 20 years. He was a member
of McKendree Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served in many

5, 2009. He was born in Indianapolis, Ind., on July 2, 1960, to the late
Roscoe and Joseph Sloan. He is survived by his loving wife, Deborah

Flora Belle Webb, age 89, of White House, passed away June 3,
2009. She was born in Sumner County on November 5, 1919, to the late
William and Lillie Maude Hardin. She is preceded in death by her husband,
William Joel Webb. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah (Bruce) Nugent
of White House; granddaughters, Carrie Craft of White House, Christy
(Scott) Collins of Franklin; great grandchildren, Sam, Katelyn, Maggie,
Max and Riley; brother, Jimmy (Pattie) Hardin of Florida; many nieces and
nephews. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of White House for

at Sumner Regional Medical Center. She was born in Sumner County on
February 4, 1928, to the late Thomas and Iva Lou Pitt. She is preceded in
death by her husband, Arthur White. She is survived by her daughter, Rita
(Roger) Briley of Cottontown; son, Thomas (Sylvia) White of Carthage;
grandchildren, Adrienne (Jamie) Kelley, Kelly (Shane) Hicks, Greg White,
Ryan White, Cole (Ashley) Briley; 4 great grandchildren. Visitation is 3

Henry David White, age 94, of Indianapolis, Ind., formerly of
Portland, passed away May 5, 2009, at his residence. He was born February
10, 1915 in Fountain Head, Tenn. He is preceded in death by his loving
wife Eva B. Hesson White; his son Marion Thomas White; and daughter Wanda
Gayle Martin. He is survived by his son James H. (Judy) White; and
daughters, Juanita (Gene) Mosley and Nancy (Ronnie) Sidwell; 11
grandchildren; several great and great great grandchildren. He was an
accomplished mason and carpenter and retired serving as a security guard
for the local American Legion Post in Indianapolis. Mr. White was a World
War II veteran with the Navy, and he was an avid hunter and gardener.
Visitation is 1 p.m., until 9 p.m., Friday, May 8, 2009, and 12 p.m.,

6, 2009. He was born in West Virginia to the late Frank and Mable Zirkle.
He is a US veteran, having served in the Navy, Air Force and Army during
WW II and Korean War. He is a member of The Lions Club of Auburndale,
Fla., and a member of Auburndale VFW. He is survived by his stepdaughter,
Marilyn Oden of Hendersonville; sister, Dolly Williams of Buckhannon, West
